Plotting the course of a revitalised London Cycling Network

Home zones are a physical manifestation of an egalitarian culture which accepts that everyone has a right to use street space — children in go-carts,
old people walking slowly with sticks and
middle-aged ladies on sit-up-and-beg bikes,
as well as people in cars.
It is a culture that accepts that street space, like any other limited resource, has to be
shared.

Did you know...?

Britain has the safest roads in Western Europe
for car drivers,
and the most dangerous for children.

Cars promise mobility, and they provide it in a largely rural setting. But in an urbanising world there is an inherent conflict between the automobile and the city. After a point, as their numbers multiply, automobiles provide not mobility but immobility.

Designing Cities for People

Did you know...?

After sleep and work,
ferrying children around by car
consumes more of a father's available time
than any other activity.

Mum and dad's taxi is still very much in operation as parents spend large chunks of their time getting their children to various activities.
Besides taking up a lot of time, parents' driving habits can influence the drivers their children will become later in life, so it's important they set a good example on these journeys.

Did you know...?

50% of all car journeys in London are under two miles, and 80% are under five miles.

In a car you are isolated from the streets [...]. On a cycle I wave to people I know, I stop to have a chat, I smell the bakery and hear the market. In a car you fight through the local area, on a cycle you are part of the local area.

The Grumpy Cyclist

Did you know...?

To travel a certain distance by bike
uses up one potato, say,
three potatoes to travel
the same distance on foot,
and sixty potatoes to go by car.
